Is AI Good for Public Infrastructure? Co-designing a Southeast Asian AI Barometer (SSEAC Large-Scale Project)

This project addresses that foundational challenge across SEA by assessing the public opinion of the implementation of AI technologies in their countries. It will address this significant regional problem by examining how co-design can be leveraged to improve the lived experience of working and living with AI in Southeast Asia. $24,000.

Digital Media for Youth Justice: Coproducing media for education and policy (ARC Linkage)

This project aims to coproduce media for education and policy with young people involved in the youth justice system to foster safe and inclusive digital media use. The project expects to generate insights into the social media literacies and digital cultures of this group – over half of whom are First Nations young people – utilising innovative, participatory methods including media-making. Expected outcomes are digital literacy knowledge, enhanced digital media skills and evidence-based digital safety education co-designed with young people. This should provide significant benefits by developing effective preventative strategies and sector-wide service integration to improve outcomes for justice-involved young people throughout Australia. $438,000.

Sydney Vietnam Media Innovation Hub

The strategic direction for the Hub is to secure seed funding, mobilise core research projects, publish key outputs, integrate those findings with existing MDIs and Faculty research centres, and finally seek external funding to build research momentum. There is strong potential to integrate other disciplinary expertise in the Hub, namely Law, Education, Economics, Human Computer Interaction, Business and Marketing. Australian Experiences of Algorithmic Culture on TikTok. (For You Project). (ARC Discovery)

This project is the first to systematically investigate how algorithmic content recommendation is shaping everyday Australian cultural experience over time, in the particular context of TikTok—the digital platform where Australians spend the most time online. The project provides critical evidence to support the government’s ongoing policy initiatives intended to regulate the activities of digital platforms. Its methodological innovations directly address the challenges of studying commercial platforms’ recommender systems through a mixed-method research design combining computational and qualitative analysis, bridging universal and individual perspectives and introducing ‘citizen science’ approaches to the field of platform studies.
